Actor Heath Ledger Is Found Dead

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

So this is kind of fucked up:

The actor Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in an apartment in Manhattan owned by the actress Mary-Kate Olsen, according to the New York City police. Mr. Ledger was 28.

Not just dead, but in the apartment of Mary-Kate Olsen? I knew those kids were a bad influence, but not killing Heath Ledger bad. His last role as what was shaping up to be the coolest Joker in the history of Batman. I hope he at least went out with a smile on his face.

Property of zooey-fan.com

This is one of those sycophantic posts that I tend to circumscribe for fear that I may one day wake up and realize that I own copies of Us Weekly or some other nauseous celeb mags. You might be familiar with the owner of those big blue eyes pictured above, and if not you might know her sister, Emily Deschanel, from Fox’s Bones. I guess you could say that I’m a fan of Zooey Deschanel’s work, and being such a person I felt it my obligation to spread word about her musical career. My only regret is that I heard it first from mandrake, and that made me feel like I was truly slacking. I give credit where credit is due though.

It seems she has an album coming out pretty soon and you can read about it and sample a couple of the tracks here. I’m currently working on being the #1 scrobbler on Last.fm, and not just for bragging rights. I actually like the songs, and she’s got a great singing voice that I could listen to for days. I have to say that I kind of think my favorite of the 3 downloadable tracks isn’t from the new album, but her duet with Leon Redbone from the Elf soundtrack. I don’t think it speaks poorly of her new stuff so much as it appeals more to my tastes, being a bit more jazzy and a little more my style.

Kudos to you, Zooey.

Delving into HDR

Dragon Inn Normal Dragon Inn HDR

Oops, looks like I added a new category. That’s right boys and girls: photography. And not just normal photography either. Nah, me and my Olympus SP550UZ are jumping right onto that trendy HDR photo bandwagon. At least I think it’s trendy, I haven’t really done any looking around to see how “in” it is at present, but since it requires a bit of patience and some tedium to capture and generate the pictures necessary to make a decent HDR image you know I’m signing up for it. For anyone who isn’t familiar with HDR and if you haven’t yet Wikipedia’d it, it stands for high dynamic range and is used primarily to pull out the maximum amount of detail from images with a wide range of light and shadow. The concept is fairly simple. You pick something to take a photo of, take 3 or more pictures of varying exposures ranging from very dark to very light, and then you use a piece of software like Photomatix to mash them together into a single image. There’s more to it than just that, as you need to pick the proper scene for it to really work correctly and there’s probably a bit of an art involved in properly adjusting things to get the maximum effect. In my example you can see that I was able to bring out detail and color in the bricks, added some extra detail and lighting to the sign, and made the sky look like it’s about to rain hell down on the earth. Like it? Hate it? Lemme know!

And for some reason this one followed it. I didn’t want to make a new post for another one of these because I’m hoping I’m just going through a phase. kthxbai.

New Year, New Stuff

Xmas Squiggly

I just have a few things to kick off the new year. First off, I’ve upped and linked to the Mr. Squiggly comic that Brent/Mandrake/omgninjabot/Brian Mandos had drawn on the inside of my Christmas Card. He wanted to see it because he claims he doesn’t remember what he drew. I’m posting it because I think it’s pretty funny, and it serves as a source of inspiration.

Secondly, there’s a new inductee to the TinyGods Hall of Shame. I know a lot of my loyal fans have likely read it by now, but I’m posting it here to increase my linktasticness.

I believe that’s all for now. I think I’ve earned some star gathering in some celestial system traversed by an Italian man who everyone considers pretty uber.
